Re: river I/I.5 and II patrol vessels

plan C Sell them and use the money and Manpower for type 26/31 programs I like the Rivers but can't imagine who would buy the Batch2 series at the price the RN is paying for them. The Batch1 series should be much more reasonably priced (Bangladesh had a look apparently) I didn't realise that Clyde ...

Re: river I/I.5 and II patrol vessels

I'm fairly sure there was some sort of EU support for the NS when we were building EEZ patrol ships in Ireland but that didn't extend to the the armament on LE Eithne. Since then I don't know. The INS is involved in a variety of "science and business projects" which are grant aided by the ...

Re: river I/I.5 and II patrol vessels

The INS seem to like Appledore......If they showed some variation of their "Type 31" design they might be tempted to bite.

I don't know if EU regulations would apply regarding a military purchase ......they don't seem to affect buying APCs from Switzerland.

Re: river I/I.5 and II patrol vessels

Very surprised if they scrap them they have a lot of years in them yet. I like the Rivers myself. The INS have just announced they intend to replace their two P40s "Peacocks". (Perhaps they might go to join their sisters in the Philippines.) If the RN was interested, Ireland might be indu...

Re: River-class Offshore Patrol Vessels [News Only]

On 24 April 2017, in a written answer to a question raised by Sir Nicholas Soames, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Defence Harriet Baldwin stated Severn would be decommissioned in 2017, with Mersey and Clyde following in 2019[14]. As of April 2017, no date has been given Tyne's decommissioning. Ha...

I've fired it a couple of times.....Liked it.
Don't recall any huge impression from the venturi blowback myself.

Re: river I/I.5 and II patrol vessels

The costs are really incredible.......If you're looking for exports don't bother asking Ireland. (though we might take the Type1s if they are cheap) We'll stick with Appledore I think. We could buy 12 P60s for that sort of cash.

Re: river I/I.5 and II patrol vessels

There is "talk" of replacing the P40s with "something similar" with notional anti-sub/mines capability (I'd prefer the Rivers) and a larger vessel, probably something similar to a Damen Crossover Logistics........If the Rivers were bought there might be a chance of going directly...

Re: river I/I.5 and II patrol vessels

Didn't realise that Mark......pity, they would be ideal for INS.....The P40s are really only suitable for Costal patrol and I think EEZ patrol will become much more "interesting" over the next 5 years.

Re: river I/I.5 and II patrol vessels

Ta Donald. I like the Rivers too....If they go for sale I'd like the INS to go for them (at the right price) as replacements for the P40s and then look for a new larger type as replacement for LE Deirdre. ......In fact both types exercised together recently http://navaltoday.com/2016/10/10/hms-sever...

Re: river I/I.5 and II patrol vessels

so a samuel Beckett costs £40M The Government has agreed to provide €54.3m for the purchase an additional ship after reaching a contract agreement with Babcock International to build it at their headquarters in Appledore. That's about £43 million Mark.....might not include the cost of the Oto Melar...

Hi Sharkbait......"There is a whole lot of Atlantic out there, and most of it is uninteresting." Afraid I couldn't agree less. The seas and seabeds are the future and if you don't police it you'll loose it. Should you guys "Brexit" and have to negotiate the EU out of your waters ...

Re: river I/I.5 and II patrol vessels

no shark bait the rivers need to be EEZ only and the international commitments need to be met by either a frigate or destroyer. Why? because we need to properly patrol this https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/346014/UK_Exclusive_Economic_Zone.pdf I'm inclined t...

Re: river I/I.5 and II patrol vessels

Sharkbait: "The Royal Navy do not need the additional burden, and certainly don't need to keep the old rivers." The Rivers can maintain standing patrols for days with the ability to launch ribs when necessary....very versatile in my opinion for border patrol but many seem to see them as to...

Re: river I/I.5 and II patrol vessels

Hi Mark.....I think they should go to Scotland into the Marine Scotland fleet. OPVs are a bit OTT for policing daytripping migrants from France in such a narrow channel. (Perhaps a swap for some of the Scottish smaller patrol boats?)

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate

I agree Mark.....It would more likely be called "HMSS Culloden" though. You could even transfer the Rivers to create a "Scottish Squadron" and transfer control of Scottish EEZ resources (fisheries oil gas etc) to Holyrood. That would be a nice gesture.
