An Invitation to the UK Defence Forum
I am embarking on an experiment in collaborative writing and wanted to extend an invite to UK Defence Forum members The goal is to take my long piece on FRES/AJAX and broaden it to include the British Army's quest to field a medium weight capability If you are interested in taking part, drop your ha...

To those wartime tasks you can add, being a light frigate!
I still think the new light frigate will actually be a River III

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.
The very notion that we think we know enough about ship classification rules, construction standards and survivability to pass judgement on one ship or another against another ship or nation is, frankly, risible. It is an extremely complex subject that defies simplistic comparisons between military ...

Re: Strike Brigades (SDSR 15)
The order to GD did include options for additional options but the wording from the MoD went something like 'but we don't expect to exercise them' Can't see additional Ajax to be honest but you never know These Strike Brigades sound very much like the FRES medium weight concept to me. The Army will ...

After all the talk of credibility and the concept of a two tier Navy being the work of the devil, here we are, looking at a two tier navy

I think I might have read somewhere they didn't have the right lifting tackle, an easily rectifiable issue!

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Surely the point is about layers of the onion, in general, the more layers the better. i.e. it would be better for QE to have the additional layer provided by Sea Ceptor. So I think the argument about whether it is a good thing or not is rather moot. The argument is about allocation of resources, pu...

DT, when did the USN switch over to low smoke cable sheathing?
That was another big lesson from HMS Sheffield I think, reinforced by various other fires in enclosed spaces such as Kings Cross in 1987 and Piper Alpha in 1988

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)
Arfah, many years and six (ish) stone ago :) Topman, I think we all agree that it would be a future aspirational capability but as I said, seems unwise to not exploit one of the aircrafts principle selling points. I thought it was always part of the concept of operations for JCA anyway? If we think ...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)
Thanks Downsizer, am thinking perhaps we need to look at the difference between carving a new expeditionary airfield out of nothing and improving an existing but austere/damaged location. A spot of runway repair, improve the fuel infrastructure, add a couple of temporary or shade hangars or some tem...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)
Downsizer, do you think the whole expeditionary airfield thing is a capability worth retaining, perhaps as part of the Army/RAF Reserve Regardless of the current stock of AM-2 (which I think is more or less the same as it has been for a while), the bomb damage repair mats and various other bits of A...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)
The MoD purchased 4,700 tonnes of AM-2 at a cost of £10m to improve and repair the runway at Port Stanley in 1982 until Mount Pleasant was completed
