Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)
My humble opinon ,,,,, I'm firmly in the skeptical but hoping ,,, sorry praying to be proved wrong , after all we do have all our eggs in one basket in regards to the f-35b which I'm not comfortable with but there is no other option open to us ( unless we want to buy a few harriers from India which ...

Re: Future 'Lighter' Frigate
I've been reading the above posts with great interest but the question I ask myself is why do we need a totally new design ? , what is achieved by this new direction ? What benefits will this bring ? this in my opinon as not been answered tbh . It makes no sense except to serve as an excuse/reason t...

Re: Future 'Lighter' Frigate
Maybe the unwillingness to confirm or deny any new type number at this point , could mean they are still not 100% sure on which direction the proposed light frigate program will head in , Considering these vessels are not going to be built until the 2030s its still very early days in my own humble o...

Re: Type 99 frigate
Can't see them starting from scratch with a totally new design tbh , more of a redesigned type 26 using the same hull sharing common features but maybe a slight step down in capabilities , probably keeping its size to accommodate future upgrades and operations/mission options , plus keeping its abil...

Re: SDSR 2015 / "Defence Cuts" General News & Discussion
9 MPA will be no surprise thanks to an informed member of this forum. ;) 2x Strike Bdes!!? One Airborne and one Amphibious, no doubt. No, 2x Bdes equipped with the Scout SV range for a lower logistic footprint. Weighing in at around 42t each , would this have a impact on deployment ? , wouldn't a l...

Great news , I did think the P-8 was the only realistic contender , but I must admit I did not think they would pull the trigger on a actual purchase yet ,

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.
does that signal the first of our type 23s being retired soon so the process of removing of equipment can begin ???? No, I believe some brand new units have been ordered for the first few ships to avoid this. That sounds very sensible I'm amazed tbh  this situation did seem the perfect opportu...

I wasn't really sure if to post here or in the type 23 thread but considering both are linked in my question I thought here seemed as good as a place as any, I've been thinking about this for a while and was wondering , considering that the green light is rumoured to be given early next year for the...

@SB , I was just about to reply to your post , but it seems things have moved on in the f-35 world since yesterday  To say I'm shocked is an understatement. , if it's true and gets confirmed then it says to me the Gov and the mod have come to the decision that the carriers will be the u...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)
I agree with jonas on this one. Absolutely no point in investing in a new variant that will be less flexible and increase the logistics. Perhaps if have we have enough B's to saturate both carriers, plus attrition reserves, and then decide we want another 50 jets it may be with investing in the A v...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)
Which is fine,. except that you create more problems in training, logistics, maintenance, extra personel etc. Being that people have been banging on about commonality, this seems to defeat the objective. Have the RAF actually stated that they want/prefer the 'A' ? Serious question as I know little ...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)
So, if we have enough airframes for deploying 2 Squadrons on board 2x QE class plus an operational conversion unit, what will the R.A.F. have to replace the 2x squadron of Harriers it requires ? Also bear in mind the requirement to have plenty of spares donors to keep the fleet airworthy. I feel 75...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)
I think 48 is a reasonable number to start at, but I hope the rumour of type A stays exactly as that. I see no point in adopting that until we have over 100 jets, which seems particularly optimistic at the moment. I think the question is do we need 100+ f-35bs , my belief is no , by all means order...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)
96 was the number at the time of the F-35C switch. 80 seems about right. Whether we get there or not is the real question. 80-90 RAF/FAA f-35bs would be a victory in the present climate in my opinion , rumours of a total buy of 48 f-35bs being purchased to cover carrier operations only have been do...

I found this small article on the RAFs site regarding the BAE 146s being used in Afghanistan , it's a few years old but gives a little insight into its operations .

Re: Future Solid Support Ship
@ACC , tbh if we don't start to think out side the box and incorporate multi roll designs to cover Other duties , then we will see retirement with out any replacement and a drop in capabilities , the gov will not splash the cash end of . We need to stop believing they will . it's not about what idea...

Re: SDSR 2015 / "Defence Cuts" General News & Discussion
IMHO multi role vessels such as your suggestion above are fine within limits, but it gets to a stage when it becomes a case of 'too many eggs'. To give them a limited amphibious capability would in my opinion be a mistake. These vessels are going to be a critical part of any CTG and as such should ...
