Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

I know were your coming from, maybe 6 or 7 x T26 instead of the carriers? would the crew situation not be as bad or worse ? I think having a big arse carrier group is worth the downside, With the benefit of hindsight the escort situation would not of been so bad, but imo it's mainly the politiacal d...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

I think a lot of people - like me - are surprised over the new calibres on the guns (40+57mm), still will be surprised ( pleasantly! ) if they come in on budget but i'm sure the business people have costed it to make a profit, I think it would be preferable to have a slightly higher spec eg hull mou...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

If the A140 design is selected and used as intended - a basic stop gap design - when the T26's start to replace the T23 in the late 2030's would it be a good idea to sell on the bum basic A140's for more T26 ( maybe less mk 41 VLS to save initial costs-abeit not a lot ! ) if money could be made avai...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Yes, welcome back CJ ! thinking about it if the Lightning program is going down the small but incremental steps it does make sense to do initial training of the carrier in the best of conditions, then as said before get lots of AAR training in, looking forward to get some cool F35 pictures mid Octob...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Was wondering about Westlant19, since the F35 are flying out there with tankers, are the F35 coming back to Britain on HMS QE? or flying back with tankers? Xcept 17 sqd

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Now it would be good if we do get 8 x T45 replacements along with 8 x T26 ! along with the T31 and yes we might as well make it 8  at least the RN would have a better chance of protecting it's carrier group and other commitments, probably the minimum for the gov's global aspirations….

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Maybe HMAS Canberra as well ! :D as you say maybe a dutch or Norwegian for the north atlantic :)

I would also expect if its par for the course to have a USMC F35 ( & Ospreys ) squadron on the QEC then a USN escort as well ?

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

I suspose if the carrier group sails east of suez with a normal peacetime escort of T45 + T23/26 then the forward based T23/26 could also meat up aswell, recently wasn't there talk ( or just spin? ) of basing a T31 in the indian area aswell? presumably the RN would prioritize having a Astute close b...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

If there was a break up of the union ( hope not! ) it would take ages for all the details to be finalised so probably would not effect the 5 x T31 build ? isn't the last T31 slated for delivery around 2029?

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Ref to the escorts needed for a carrier group, I think the minimum in peacetime would be 1 x T45 & 1 xT26/23, so why not assign a dedicated T45=T26/23 to each carrier? i.e. HMS Duncan + HMS Cardiff to HMS QE, make sure they have the same training + refit cycles etc and then do the same for HMS D...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

ref T26 news thread If the T31 was canned & T26 was increased by 2 or speeded up, Would it be possible for the UK to include in the Legal contract for a follow on batch of T26 that they have to be built in the UK on time and if the scot's leave any relocation costs of transferring the build are ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Especially on so few units ! T45 R&D again, maybe all future batches could have the same main systems but adjust the weapon load ( or length ) accordingly...for example.....a AAW variant with BMD, boat bay etc 72 mk41 + CAMM, 160m ? ASW same RADAR etc, boat bay etc 36 mk41 + CAMM, standard lengt...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Would it be possible to combine a fixed array radar along with a light weight "Sampson" style radar high up to get the same long distance coverage? probably would be even more expensive but maybe best of both worlds with increasingly faster missiles any advantage may save lives..

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

would make a lot of sense for the T45 replacements to be based on a T26 but more focus on AAW, as I think has been suggested before, 10 would be awesome !!! ( even 8 would be good ) then maybe back to a more ASW focused evolved T26 after that.

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)

138 over the production run of the F35 is not that much if we are getting 48 by 2023, 138 - 48 by 2023 - 90 over the next 40 years (2063?) = 3 x F35 a year should do it ! if project tempest is like the EAP is to typhoon, then anything coming from it probably will only just start production in the la...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

IMO the Albion's replacements would benefit from a small hanger for say 1 or maybe 2 Merlins mainly for emergency repairs to helicopters Lilly-padding from the QEC/LPH task group in these situations & it would also benefit if they were doing solo ( with escort) type deployments but as said it is...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Unfortunately I think the armed forces due to lack of funds and the pound going down & other factors will just tumble from financial crises to another, I can't see the T31 cancelled as that would drop on paper the number of escorts, maybe cancelling the T31 would be a good option & selling o...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Nowadays, modern high-end escorts as a typical life of 34-36 years. If UK want to keep 18-months drumbeat, this means RN must operate 22-24 high-end escorts, as Lord Jim-san says. Curreltly, RN can "build and operate" 6+8+2 = 16 high-end escorts (if 1.5B GBP of T31e converted into 2 high-...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Well at least the river b2 still have a "P" designation & a small gun instead of an 'F" so as not to confuse the politicians ! (fingers crossed) maybe giving them more armament would not be such a good idea yet ? until the mid 2020's/30's when T31/T26 start to come online. I do ho...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Does seem crazy, surely for example the T26 and T45 replacements were built in Scotland at 18 months intervals for 16 hulls would that not be 24 yrs? maybe a bit slower for the first couple of hulls = 25yrs? then start again for the replacements, then another yard for the MCM replacement and RFA shi...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

i would like to see the T31 as a stop gap but i can see the bean counters seeing a T31 and thinking its cheaper to buy and crew and that it does the same job a s a T26 and thinking they can get way with more cheaper T31 and just maintain 8 x T26, I believe there is a role for a less than gold plated...
