Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

I wonder if the old King George V drydock in Southampton could be another potential option? Close proximity to Portsmouth and should be large enough to accommodate the carriers. Though if its going to cost a pretty penny to bring back into use you may as well spend the money on rebuilding a Dock in...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

There are some issues with Rosyth and continuous carrier availability. The second carrier will still be at 20-30 days notice during the periods of dry docking, so they will have to be kept short (a few weeks). The carriers will only be dry docked for the hull maintenance type work that can only be ...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

seem to remember CEC being fitted to HMS Duncan for trials when new Don't know about that, but we had an order in (5% of a production batch for several USN ships) and we cancelled it. - so all the Links (16 and beyond...) which come nowhere near are now "the thing" When Duncan was Launche...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

I do not think even the Carriers have good Command capabilities, wasn't that one of the things removed to save a few pennies? WE know the RN wanted to move forward with CEC, but could not get any such programme funded as it was seen as "Nice to have" rather then essential back when these ...

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN) [News Only]

So I was watching Episode 4 of "Warship: Life at Sea" last night and I noticed that one of the sailors was using a 50 Calibre Heavy Machine gun. I did not think the Royal Navy used them?. I thought it was GPMG and Mini guns only at that level? Its a pleasant surprise, as much as i would no...

Just like the aircraft, we can't actually afford the buses. We may have to rely on allies to populate the bus wing....
I assume it would be a Joint force set up, but teamed with Stagecoach and not the RAF ;)

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Don't worry, Phalanx has a fantastic service record of successfully intercepting a friendly battleship and several friendly aircraft, it is entirely reasonable to depend on it as the sole layer of defence. Exactly, I say implement Sea Dart on the QE class. ;) How about a pair of Octuple Pom Poms :D...

Obviously the main goal would eventually be EMALS, but thats too far ahead. Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Here's a question to think about while we wait for PoW's naming and float out. How would you IMPROVE the QE class in future upgrades and refits? Keep it reasonable. No "third island" or "nuclear reactor" type answers allowed! Purely Hypothetical but: Built as CATOBAR from the st...
