Re: The Elephant in the Room
There has been a fair amount of discussion around moving the cost of the Trident renewal i of the defence budget, as it used to be. Would a more palatable option be to move the cost of the 9 Poseidon aircraft out and put it under Urgent operational requirement (increased Russian Submarine activity)....

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Given all the issues with defence procurement, projects ending up over costs and over time. The National shipbuilding strategy could provide an innovative way forward. Providing a possible uplift in the number of escort ships in the Royal Navy. The Royal Navy has had mixed level escourt fleets befor...

A small SSK force would be useful for all of th above, and built as part of a national shipbuilding startegy, along with Type 31 and MARS SSS

Re: National Shipbuilding Strategy
Sir John has been wasting his time, apparently: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2017/01/03/naval-shipbuilding-strategy-threatens-baes-monopoly-destined/ Too much common sense to prevail I guess. What's more sorting is the following: "The Chancellor controls the spending and there’s just no...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)
A split buy makes sense on the following grounds. 1) The A is cheaper, has longer range and better fits the RAF needs 2)It would allow the Bs to be primarily an RN asset and move away from tailored are groups to dedicated air groups. possible structure: F35B 2 RN frontline squadrons of 16 aircraft in...

But with the Type 26 firgate being shortlisted by both Canada and Australia, it looks like the T26 and not the T31 has export potential, if so will this have an impact on RN numbers?
On the T31 , I think both BAE designs are out of the running, and it will be the Venator 110

Re: National Shipbuilding Strategy
Some thoughts on the NSS. 1) The report is apsirational, and seeks some good solutions to the current monopoly of BAE. The challenges are as follows: a) the need for additional investment beyound the current defence budget in order to resource Cammil laird, Babcock etal to deliver the Type 31. This ...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
They may be impressive looking ships, but they will go to sea with an inadequate number of aircraft and helicopters, no dedicated naval fixed wing squadrons, and in a. Navy that's short of both manpower and modern escorts. They are effectively paper tigers. As much as any thing they are a symbol of ...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate
There is a long recent history of procurement disasters and cancelations: TSR2, CVA01, Nimrod AEW and MR4 to name but a few. We also seem over confident in our designs, and have produced ships that are inadequatley armed (the Falkands war highlighted the failings in both AAW and ASW). Even Good desi...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate
the Bae & venator designs to me are more like corvettes or ships you'd sell to a 3rd world country we need better than that They are what you get when the government has a budget of X for defence, when Y might be required. So we can only afford a small number of Type 26s, we only have 19 escour...
