Re: Airbus A400M Atlas (RAF)

Low retard drogues on that chute, so not all that 'low level'. High drag drogues are needed for real low level ops.

Since when did we have to do a 'business case' for National Defence? Are the opposition going to be subject to CMA investigationi if they try to 'monopolise' us?

I am led to believe there will be some of the naval architects from T31 switching to QE at the very least.

Re: Jackal and Coyote MWMIK (Army)

Jackal would be deployed by underslung load, not inside, the same is true for LR WMIK due to weapons mounts, and the need for the Helo to land and deploy a ramp.

Theatre entry was always supposed to be by RAF heavy transport (fixed wing) and medium Para sleds (or LAPES). Just saying.

Re: Javelin Anti-Tank Missile (British Army)

Sorry for the delay in responding, life has a habit of getting in the way. I am not saying that I am a leading authority on this, but I have some relevant experience. Most of my comments allude to the operational usage of infantry portable ATGM in a contested environment. In many ways, ATGM have bee...

Re: Javelin Anti-Tank Missile (British Army)

At the risk of my sanity, I will defer to the armchair generals infinite wisdom. Operational experience and extensive training is irrelevant in the light of such omniscience. Shame what has happened to the rather good MP net.

Re: Javelin Anti-Tank Missile (British Army)

To be blunt, you don't have a clue. On paper, all these things are nice to have. Trigat should have been game changing, the design house said it was and swallowed over 100m doing so. Same design house for Akeron. I bring you back to my original point. On a modern contested battlefield, you dont have...

Re: Javelin Anti-Tank Missile (British Army)

I believe it was initally billed as "Javelin ER", apologies. My point is entirely tactical and from extensive experience with Milan and other systems. The former was brilliant, the precursor to MMP (Trigat MR) was not. In fact, car crash was the most polite description used. I had the misf...

Re: Javelin Anti-Tank Missile (British Army)

In an ideal world, I would agree entirely. Looking at what is happening in Ukraine, I think the days of organised infantry defence are gone. The use of UAV and micro UAV has denied cover to all but the most significant defensive positions or to high mobility teams. I think guided artillery rounds wi...

Re: Javelin Anti-Tank Missile (British Army)

My point is that in a contested environment, fire direction is linear in order to limit counter fire. It is nice to switch fire to an emerging target, but in reality, after shooting, most AT teams are relocating for the next shot or scarpering to avoid counter fires. The hidden target, in Armour ter...

Re: Javelin Anti-Tank Missile (British Army)

Having fired Milan, I am familiar with SACLOS. My point is, any mid course corrections are difficult in a firefight, artillery barrage, or shoot and relocate evolutions. My point was that it isn't SACLOS. Or MCLOS or any other flavour of CLOS. If you are in an area of operations with no cover then ...

Having fired Milan, I am familiar with SACLOS. My point is, any mid course corrections are difficult in a firefight, artillery barrage, or shoot and relocate evolutions. Fine under armour or if on Helo's but not for infantry. Fire and forget is the only way to avoid being slotted on a contested area...

Re: Javelin Anti-Tank Missile (British Army)

Man in the loop only works if you have stable firing platform and reliable comm link. Current seeks have home on jam which renders some of the IR jammers irrelevant. On a modern battlefield, the luxury of firing and then performing in flight correction is a luxury only if you have a standoff range o...

T54/55 are easy to train people on, simple to maintain, and run forever. In an attritional war, it isn't the number of tanks that is the problem, but the trained crews.

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

That is fitted to a side pannier on the turret. In reality, it is not all that dissimilar to the Javelin mount on the Warrior test bed trialled 4 years ago. I imagine it would be that hard to fit to Ajax (Javelin ER) if there was an appetite from MoD.
