Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

I think there is too much political correctness in choosing names these days. Putting grand names on the persieved 'cheap' frigate is a little bit daft. On the other hand putting names beginning with A wouldn't be tasteful as they wouldn't want the T31 to be compared with the T21 of the past. (altho...

She is.. but i think she'd look far better with a single (longer) island and no ski jump.

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

Apologies if this has been mentioned before. Saw this tweet from a few days ago. The image looks different to the previous ones i’ve seen. most notably the Phalanx forward of the bridge. Can’t see the other? maybe a re design? cost saving? It also says they are now 1.2b each.. *edit ive just realise...

Re: Future Littoral Strike Ships

It's smart thinking and good news in a way. Potentially 2 modified points / paid for using funds that are allegedly ring fenced / no cost for weapons / likely civilian manned or RFA / addition aviation platforms so that the elderly Argus can be withdrawn. All giving large capability boost for little...

Re: Type 23 Frigate (Duke Class) (RN) [News Only]

Of course, it could just be that the RN are now pushing the T23 fleet through refit as quickly as they can before they have to meet the heavy demands of providing continuously available escorts for the carriers from ~late 2021 onwards. That is fine until they are all shagged and need more refits du...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Good to see POW nearing completion. I must have missed the point when she was floated out of the dry dock. Doing a bit of digging it appears to be about a year ago. Ah well. It seems POW gets very little attention seeing as QLZ has hogged all the limelight this year. It's easy to forget we are going...

Re: Astute Class Attack Submarine (SSN) (RN)

Going back to the Astutes. I notice HMS Audacious hasn't left Barrow as it should have done this year. It's been around 18 months since she hit the water. I believe the previous one 'Artful' left after around 15 months in the water. I can see the build schedule going back even further. It seems pret...

As I have said in the past for 1.1 billion a year over 15 years you could get[.....]if the budget went up to just 1.35 billion we could still get all this but now do away with type XX and have 14 type 26 Let's be honest it's all a bit of fantasy but it is the time of year for wish lists :D Obviousl...

Wave Knight departed Cammell Laird yesterday but had engine trouble. Pictured at Pier head last night. She's back at Cammells now. She was fitted with Phalanx fore and aft which suggests a Gulf deployment when she is fixed.

Re: RFA Fort Victoria

Having a good peruse of Goole maps as you do and came across Fort Victoria (or is it Fort George) at Cammell Laird. I think this was circa 2010 when these images were taken. What suprised me is the Sea Wolf silo intact. I always assumed this was removed years ago. My question is how much work would ...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

So seven of the eight T26 have already been named. That happened quite quickly! My bets on the final name is Edinburgh but it seems the south west and north west england has been left out. Manchester / Liverpool / Bristol / Exeter ? It’s a shame that we aren’t getting the full 13 for a better geogra...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)

If extra manning is found for the Rivers i would have preferred the RN to re activate one (or two) of the escorts currently laid up as harbour training ships instead. The current fleet appears to be quite stretched as we speak. Whilst increasing UK patrols is important post brexit there are other pr...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

Edinburgh has to be a given to keep the scots happy. Sheffield / Newcastle / Manchester / Liverpool all worth a shout but very northern centric so not all. Maybe Gloucester / Southampton or Exeter may slip in there to address the balance. I can't see there being a Plymouth with the recent news about...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

But the T31e is not being design for war fighting in mind. its a fact. I think the idea is that they would never be put in harms way. We have to accept a cut in proper escort numbers to 14. But the T31e does allow us to keep the current standing tasks etc. This seems a good plan on paper in peace ti...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Some of the early computer renderings of CVF showed 4 Phalanx. I assume one fell victim to cost reduction. I'll see if I can dig up an image. Here's the first I found, there's probably a lot more. 1-index.jpg What i dont understand is, why cut x1 Phalanx to save money. Surely we already have some s...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Assuming the T31e program gets ditched I can only see the following outcome: 1. Accept a drop in escort numbers down to 14. This would mean x8 T26 would be safe, at least. 2. Retain River B1 to make up the numbers and use them on standing tasks (as they are now). Look at up arming the remaining B2's...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Perhaps it is an eye opener that the RRS Sir David Attenborough, a large semi complex research ship is being built for approx 150m. What is also interesting is that it has been less than 2 years from the keel being laid to the hull launch. I believe she is expected to be in service in 2019. Type 26 ...

Re: Astute Class Attack Submarine (SSN) (RN)

Yesterday I saw a pic of a bow section of one of the Astutes outside Cammell Laird next to the new Polar research ship. It is said to be the 7th boat HMS Agincourt. I wasn't aware until recently that BAE were subcontracting work to other yards especially sections of the boats. But a newsletter for C...

Re: Astute Class Attack Submarine (SSN) (RN)

I'd say that the Astutes are nearer to every 3 years rather than 2. Certainly the first few were but whether this can be sped up a bit with the later builds as the initial problems are ironed out. I think the last 'Artful' was commissioned in 2016. Audacious will probably leave this year but probabl...
