Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

The FSSS design should be circa similar in size to the Tides and the MRSS does appear to be in the right place. The MARS concept of being able to support Land operations, Air operations and Afloat operations might sound like jack of all trades master of none but in this case is it? The concept needs...

Re: Current & Future Coastal Forces - General Discussion

Does this not indicate broadly what we already know. We will have a continuous at sea deterrent, a carrier task group, some effective amphibious capabilities and the new OPS/CFS capabilities to free up escorts. The reality is the Royal Navy lacks the number of escorts outside these duties to patrol ...

Sunk costs.... no pun intended. The T26 would have been the better buy for lots of reasons but 2Bn is not the comparator because the GFX is mostly sunk costs with little resale value..... unless the T23s could be sold as they decommission.

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

How does the RN's "availability" compare to the commercial sector. Would a cruise ship be out at sea for more days than a warship? Could TQM and 6 Sigma approaches be adapted to improve availability? It seems to me that Ben Wallace is asking the right questions. Afterall, I am sure "y...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

For AEW for a carrier group is it cheaper to get more E7? I think we need more crowsnest as well but in terms of vfm I wonder whether V22s or E7s would actually be cheaper in terms of total cost of ownership?

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

Apparently the UK shipbuilding industry could not build an effective frigate for the budget. I think most would agree with this. So importing foreign skills so we can learn (whilst getting a bargain at the same time), seems an entirely sensible strategy. I never thought the T31 was going to be parti...

Re: Fantasy T31 and Fantasy Fleet Builder [New]

Lets just continue ot discuss the T-31 and possible platforms in the Fantasy thread as we have done. Only the name has changed and if something more substantive appears then it can be cross reference with the T-31 thread. From my perspective this thread is in the wrong place, and unlike some of you...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Has anyone asked if BAe can build two T26 for the T31 budget? I wouldn't be surprised if they said yes. This option would be conditional on a faster build. Which should mean more profit for their shareholders

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

If I compare a T45 or T26 against Far East Naval assets e.g. Japan, South Korea, Australia, China we don't seem to be particularly strong on systems or technology. I think we have spent far too much time comparing our capabilities against our European allies instead of our potential adversaries.

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Seems like a bizarre rant. Defence is largely about being in the right place at the right time with the right capability. Surely the USN needs to demonstrate that day in day out and has the assets for BMD.

Am I missing something?

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)

Other than the carrier based priority I'd like to see our resources using the F35 for EW. It seems to be a suitable platform for this and one than the Europeans and RAF/RN aren't particularly strong on.

Maybe something the Marine Corp are still thinking about too.

As an island nation we should have a Navy that can handle the current and future threats that can be reasonably foreseen. I see a Russia with a President who is very keen to reassert the Old Power of the USSR. There is more than a passing semblance to Putin's Russia and Hilter's Germany. Even down t...

Re: Astute Class Attack Submarine (SSN) (RN)

This must be one of the reasons why we need to build more vessels at a higher tempo and in higher volume. The ability to learn from design mistakes, advances in knowledge and technology and to try new technologies needs to filter into our weapons programs at a faster rate than four or so odd decades...

I think we all would be. The need for an escort design over a patrol boat is painfully glaringly obvious but we are being sold a pup with the budget and Leander design

Where as I believe that EEZ patrols should be looked after by the whole fleet. i.e. It could be the T26, Bay or a MHCP taking a trip to the Ascension / Diego Garcia etc. Some will be fun for the crew, some less so. Ultimately training, sailor retention and how nice the platform is that they live and...

Re: Fantasy T31 and Fantasy Fleet Builder [New]

I hate what @Repulse has written in some ways, because it indicates further cuts in numbers, but it is entirely coherent. OK my strategy would be to take a three pronged approach - maximise T26 numbers and build rate. Scrap the T31e idea and build the MHCP high technology to maximise exports. This i...

The RN would do better to stop the T-31 programme and invest the funding in speeding up the T-26 programme, having the first delivered no later than 2023 and the last of the eight planned by 2032. Totally agree. It's a fantasy thread but the discussion has turned serious. @Repulse has made lots of ...

Yeah why train the Household guards to be soliders I mean they are a flag waving display type of task. We should scrap all their training and reduce the size of the army replacing them with G4S civvies.

The money saved would be huge. Maybe in times of war G4S could do jack sh1t
