Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

It's not shafting America at all, they don't want to buy the jet themselves. They'd much rather their ally with a much more limited budget generate as much capability from it as they can, given the worsening world order. If this means cheaper home grown cats and drones to suit, but a fully capable C...

How bizarre.

So then gents - what are the odds of the RN providing the catapults for both Nimitz AND Ford?

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)

Apologies if this has already been discussed - but if we wrote off the f35 order at 48 airframes - how much cash would that leave tempest to play with? Impossible to tell as the MoD have only ordered 48, and as such have only produced figures to Parliament based on that number (£18.4bn to buy and o...

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)

+ Tempest is going to be expensive How much? £ 35 bn in today's money? 2 QEs =6, an airwing (not just a token one) twice that ==18bn in all, take twice that = Tempest - BTW, I support the prgrm - let's just not forget the sense of proportion. Money doesn't grow on trees, though Sunak is working ove...

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)

My .02 Euro worth is that the synergies between civilian and military sectors of aerospace and shipbuilding are overstated. Over the last two decades we've had basically zero commercial shipbuilding, yet we've delivered Astute, CVF and Type 26 and are back in the export game. Conversely we have a w...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Any sources for your highly sensitive information? Which part? 1. Bae/T26 sole source/open book contract is public record. 2. Request for funding to develop Scotstoun as a "frigate factory": well publicized by Bae. Computer generated videos of the facility are still on YouTube as far as I...

So.. they built the carrier's?

Much in the same way a bricklayer builds a house?

By putting blocks together?

Might the reason alot of the kit you guys say is needed (past what has been announced), hasn't been announced... because it is already there?

The place did build the carriers after all.

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Babcocks have taken a 31 million pound punt and built a build hall that can take a 140 meter ship which is great for type 31 and maybe Type 32 but it will not be any good for type 4X with type 26 and 45 at 150+ meters and we could see the Future type 4X hitting 160 meters plus. We need to remember ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

construct the Frigate Factory on the Clyde after all? The current mood music is positive. Why would they? Most companies would push for productivity gains, but they have the T26s in the bag ... and Ron says that :?: T4(x) cannot be tailored, to fit the bill?? If true (and he seems to be the unoffic...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Does that price include the Gantry Crane that fits inside? But anyhow lot less than Bae wanting the Government to fork out 200 mill. The BAE proposal was for a lot more than a big empty shed to keep the rain out. By the way, the UK government/tax payer is paying for the Rosyth shed in just the same...

Well it's a few steel girders at the moment, but they've ordered tooling etc. etc.

Pretty sure most factories are big sheds until you fill them.

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)

Given how France has behaved with Brexit, Brexit maybe, but we have had some good collaborations with the French in the military sphere. As for the FCAS be assured the French will want to make a naval version for their new CV. Part of me thinks we should write off the F35, limit the fleet to 48 air...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Credit to Babcock for committing to such a level of investment on what is a pretty modest contract. https://twitter.com/NavyLookout/status/1337343942103339009?s=20 https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2020/12/babcock-invests-in-advanced-shipbuilding-facility-for-type-31/ Now we just need the Frigat...

Interesting to see VLS in the above image in B position.

I wonder if that graphic came from babcock? How many vls do we think we can fit in there?

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

They wouldnt have gone with Absalon from the start because they weren't initially registered as Frigates and therefore would have undermined their case in the competition. They are still very similar ships and what with the under-flight deck storage space, highly likely to be equipped with towed son...
