Re: Type 32 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

Absalon has much more than just an extra deck. Or much less , depending on your point of view ;) ...forgetting for a moment that it doesnt actually HAVE an extra deck. The open architecture of the flex deck design means that an Absalon clone will never meet RN Frigate standards of damage control wi...

Re: Type 32 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

Abasalon class is bigger than IH Well as Absalon has a LOA of 137,6M and a beam of 19,5m , and Iver Huitfeldt is 138,7m long and 19,8m wide, I'd say that you are mistaken ;) ......Both ships have a FL displacement just shy of 6650 metric tonnes. it has an extra deck. No that is a quite common misco...

Well the CV-90 has proven to be the better more adaptable platform I dont think that is an unreasonable claim ;) ...what is indisputable is that , some teething troubles on the CV90 MK IIIs aside, overall the swedish IFV is built to a higher standard and is a more reliable vehicle. We've also thoro...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

It's interesting that BAE never appealed the loss of a £5.5Bn contract decided on such political grounds, isn't it? Not really, considering that the succes rate of these appeals isn't far off 0%*. When the chance of a reversal of a decision is so small , it simply isnt worth the time, money and eff...

Indonesia shortlists T31e :- https://www.janes.com/defence-news/news-detail/indonesia-shortlists-four-options-in-follow-on-to-sigma-10514-frigates On the face of it Babcock would seem to have a good chance due to A140s commonality with the two Huitfeldt based AAW frigates Indonesia signed a contrac...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

@MikeKiloPapa CSC full load displacement 9,400t, light 7,800t, deadweight 1,600t, deadweight doesn't look an outlier compared with FFG-62 figures 7,400t FLD, 6,100t LWD, 1,300t DW and Iver Huitfeldt 6650t FLD, 5450t LWD 1,200t DW Its an outlier when you compare the deadweight as a ratio of the FL d...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

My speculation/theory is the increase displacement driven by the CSC SPY-7 GaN radar. No, it really isnt. Ofc a bigger more powerful radar is going to add weight to the design, but not nearly as much and perhaps not for the reasons you'd think. I'll explain in detail later. CSC SPY-7 vs the T26 Art...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

BAE quoted T26 displacement at 6,900t, not specifying if light, standard or full load, the above PBO report on the CSC quoting 7,800t light ship displacement, assuming the BAE T26 figure is also light ship displacement, CSC shows an increase of 900t, looks high? For once i agree with you Nick :D .....

I have no idea how it technically stacks up to JLTV tho. Quite favorably if the Danish army patrol vehicle competition is to be believed. JLTV is a much cheaper vehicle and apparently it shows. Here in DK it went up against the Otokar Cobra II, Foxhound and Eagle 5 and initially i thought they had ...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

It's been debated endlessly but the only real reason to choose the 76mm over the 57mm is NGFS.. But apparently not enough, because while the Bofors gun might very well fulfill the requirements , saying that 57mm=76mm , is simply not true. The 76mm is a bigger , more powerful and capable system. per...

In these "gray-zones", a long range something is in many cases very difficult to use. As such, 57 mm gun (superior in short range) is much useful than a 127 mm gun (long range). Just to clarify, i was only discussing the 5" gun in relation to NGFS, which as you yourself notes, is rea...

Not anymore though.......modern container vessels are only capable of 20-22kts at mosts ( whereas for instance Maersk's E class could -unofficially achieve in excess of 28kts! :wtf: ) At 25 kts , the Absalons are a bit slower than most frigates, b...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

The versatility of the Absalon class will not have gone unnoticed by RN along with the similar and equally versatile Damen crossover designs but I think the reason why the IH design was chosen is simple...... RN don't want Absalon. When you say they're versatile, what you mean is they do several th...

3. Ditch the ridiculously expensive ammunition handling system and save $35M per ship. It is a needlessly extravagant luxury item that you can ill afford.
