Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

Regarding HMS Glasgow's 2026 in service date, if suspect that's actually the date ready for full operational service as first of class it will have extensive trials for 18-24 mths so the real date is probably nearer 2023 and chances are the 2nd and third ships will be ready for duty by 2026 too rath...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

The RAN put its investment into its expanded Submarine replacement programme so it won't be in the market for a Carrier anytime soon. They have studied the F-35B option for the Canberra's and decided not to progress down that route. Basically because they felt they could cover the fleet with the RAA...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

I caught the shoddy reporting on the BBC yesterday morning where the presenters were clueless and the researchers fed up the usual guff from an abbreviated Wiki story with all the negative questions, just before she was due to sail in. So much so that I decided to watch the half hour Forces TV speci...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Dave Cullen has stated in the last couple of hours that QE is having a few days R&R then going to berth for fuel. Well its a mix of RN crew and ACA civilian technicians so I would guess they get weekends off and some will probably return home whilst some of the crew will get shore leave. On a p...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Didn't the original design include a JBD? I seem to remember one being included before the switch to CATOBAR in 2010. The CATOBAR design obviously included one but then it disappeared when the design switched back to STOVL Yes the early designs had a JBD but they are rather expensive and as indicat...

Re: Type 26 Global Combat Ship [News Only]

Why does each vessel name of the class have to start with the same letter, to my knowlage that's only been done with the T45s and Astutes. The T23s don't follow that pattern so why should the T26s They don't as such, some classes are named for the Alphabet, others classes have different common them...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

The QEC are STOVL carriers and designed around that capability and price constraints. If to be classed as anything they would be fouth generation STOVL carriers, the Spanish Dedalo being the first, Invincible's 2nd, Cavour the 3rd as designed to operate Harrier & F-35B with QNLZ being 4th giving...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)

Typical of the back stabbing crab air again. If they do then JFL becomes a farce again and the Carrier Strike element should go to the RN and their should be a minimum of 72 aircraft, preferably 90 for an active reserve to ensure full Carrier Strike capability as and when required. The F-35A won't b...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

I was under the impression that the Wasp Class would eventually be replaced by the sub-class of America Class with well deck, Check the DID; they have the order recorded, all the way to the launch date/ year. Yesterday's edition, I think. I have had to beef up my security (you should see the bugs m...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Interesting but its just an unquoted piece as yet and not corroborated. However it does show a failing of the process, they tested a prototype system on land and then immediately designed a new super carrier around it and started building it. They should have really fitted the kit into one of the mo...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

During the period when CATOBAR was in play was the parallel deck design as intended for CAV 01 considered? It has always seemed to me that such an arrangement would have been ideally suited to QEC rather than the traditional angled deck. No you can see from the model photos I posted that it returne...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

What would the overall length of a CATOBAR QE/PoW have been? Seems longer with that angled deck extension on the stern/transom. I'm not sure if they ever published them or it could be they didn't really count the flight deck round down but the width change it more relevant for dock clearances. At l...

Are Phalanx CIWS allready installed? No you can see the platforms are empty. Those and the 30mm guns along with the passive systems will be added once the ship gets to Portsmouth. Thinking about that will that mean them turning the ship in the harbour or leaving the harbour to turn round as I doubt...

Re: Type 26 Global Combat Ship [News Only]

I'm guessing the LCS missile requirement is a very unique specifications which has led the others to drop out, so I wouldn't use it as a guideline for Type 26 as such. I'm hoping they may do an UOR and buy in new Harpoons and/or Tomahawk as a stop gap for the Anglo French Stormshadow replacement. Th...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)

For those who asked: the UK numbers are exactly what we were expecting and confirm what was contained in the last NAO Carrier Strike report. Considering the 2 years (roughly) time between contract and delivery (which means that LRIP 12 is the contract for FY 2018 and delivers in FY 2020); and assum...
