Cheers everyone!
I hadn't seen the playground when visiting FAAM a little while ago. Looks like a good idea by somebody.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Has anyone else noticed on google Earth, on the grassy area outside the Fleet Air Arm museum in Yeovilton, there is a deck layout of a QE carrier?
Definately not 1:1 scale either!

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

There will be more motion with a CAMM silo up forward on a smaller ship (Type23 for example), but I accept that vertical movement of the silo may need to be taken into account against the height at which the "cold launch" ends and the missile propellant ignites. Forward movement of the sh...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

wonder if india is actually going to go for it and buy the plans for the qe design ? as I said before I think there might be a very good chance, its just perfect for what they are after with mods to there needs. Zero chance. Their corrupt purchasing system (backhanders / bribes) would scuttle any a...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

India is focusing entirely on a 'built in India' policy, probably due to the rise in nationalism and how much of a disaster the previous CV purchase was/is. So, they could take it to an entirely new level of ineptitude with their DRDO (Defense Research Development Organization). A greater level of ...

Interesting to note that the USN is removing the carrier ATTDS. https://strategypage.com/htmw/htsub/articles/20190225.aspx The U.S. Navy has ordered the Anti-Torpedo Torpedo Defense System (ATTDS) removed from the five CVN (nuclear-powered aircraft carriers) it had been installed on for testing and ...

Often a study is just a delaying tactic to spending money... Commonly, it is simply wasting money. Just arse-covering by public servants who do not want to make a decision and risk their careers, without having a "get out of jail free" card and be able to say "advice given to us stat...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

I'm curious to know if Rosyth's basin is large enough to hold both carriers at the same time. Would PoW have to be temporarily moved out from the basin's J/K berths into the Firth of Forth's deep water channel to make room? Heaps of room in there and the tugs know what they are doing. Queenie would...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

A planned 6 week period to clean the hull by the sounds of it, maybe retouch the paint? The timespan is about right for a waterblast and repaint of the hull (beneath the waterline). Couple in with that the distance that she has travelled would indicate being potentially a bit earlier than planned, ...

Possibly the scurvy knave who scratched it was flogged on it either before (or aft of) the Main Mast. I certainly hope so! Looking at the opposite end of the table there is very little damage to that end. Having built & refurbished Wardroom and Captain's tables in the past, the idioti...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

We saw similar with the land based testing ramp, although I expect that the low WoD makes it more obvious as the CV looked to be only travelling at maybe 10 knots. As WoD increases the angle of change might reduce. IMHO. The way the bulbous bow was almost breaking the surface confirmed that. Not ve...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

An interesting video. It looks like the US supplied the deck handling crew with these jets.
Also interesting to note the rapid change in exhaust nozzle direction as the jet clears the ramp. It puts extra effort into the lift phase at the lower speed off of the ramp.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

The cheapest way was to build them 300m from the start of build Correct. All the systems and plant necessary to make catapults work (steam) would be a massive gutting of the ship and rebuild. IF EMALS ever gets working, you still have space issues to fit that system into the hull. On top of that, t...
