The newest Type 23s are scheduled to retire in about 15 years time anyway.Poiuytrewq wrote:It's a great ship, would its performance be good enough to keep it relevant for another 15 to 20 years? If so why are we not simply building more T23's?

Re: Storm Shadow Missile (RAF)
The original RAF order was for 900 as per Hansard. I can't remember the exact figures but I think publicly the total number of Storm Shadows used by the RAF is around 100. Obviously the exact remaining amount of the original 900, aside from expended rounds, isn't likely to be publicized.

Re: UK Satellite Navigation System
The proposals being for air-launched systems, it's doubtful they'll have the payload for launching GPS type satellites into MEO, but regardless they'll be a quick way to start building our launch capabilities.

Re: Astute Class Attack Submarine (SSN) (RN)
How? Can't do anything without impacting dreadnought, which is an immovable object. The design work and the knowledge of how to build them is already there, aside from a number of updates that'd no doubt be installed. This would llikely allow them to be in the water sooner compared to the current A...

Interesting one from HMS Protector on Twitter, no doubt a subtle jibe in reference to the loss of an embarked helicopter capability compared to her predecessors.

It's been suggested that the QE plot near Malta is actually one of the Echo-class ships. The latest plot from MT would suggest she's in Algeria

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
^ HMS Portland?! Aside from when useful for photo ops (like the HMS QE marked ones), the RN don't often give a lot of attention to what markings are on which airframe. The Merlins move around squadrons and assignments too often for it to be worthwhile changing them. ZH860 was given tiger markings b...

Personally I doubt any of those three will be included. We could certainly do with the Phalanx off her once they've been upgraded to the latest spec, and the Artisan can be recycled onto POW (unless she's had one fitted already?) or the future frigates.

On the subject of weapons on QEC, or her embarked squadrons. As it stands the Invincible class packed a bigger punch in the anti-ship department with the SHAR/Sea Eagle combo that the QEC is planned to carry? That's really surprising to hear... :lolno: I'm not sure, but the only light- ish on the h...

Can't find any info on this online so thought I may as well ask here, does anyone know if there's any reason why the latest Phalanx models seem to often come in all over grey rather than grey with a white radome? Might not be any real reason at all, but I'm just a bit curious

Zero cost to fit perhaps, but not zero cost to maintain and arm yet another unique weapons system. The 6m below deck requirement is quite a limitation too, compared to other CIWS at least.NickC wrote:The advantage of Goalkeeper is its a zero cost option they are sitting in the warehouse

Think you're taking that part of my post a bit too seriously, it was more a theoretical point than a suggestion for actual procedures.
